Light Saber Cake Ideas

A Star Wars lightsaber cake is a very popular design for this party theme. There are many ways in which you can create a lightsaber cake and even the novice baker will be able to pull this off. The basic instructions include baking a 9" X 13" cake then cutting the cake up into pieces. Once the cake is cut, arrange the pieces alongside each other to create the lightsaber. The cake is then frosted or covered in fondant. The lightsaber handle can be frosted or covered with a different colored fondant. You can add more details to the handle if you chose to.

The lightsaber cake image pictured here was provided courtesy of You, On a Cookie. This design is currently their most popular cake. The lightsaber is made of hard candy. A mold making kit was purchased to help them create the shape. They even backlit the lightsaber by placing glow sticks behind it so that when the lights went out... the saber glowed! The finished lightsaber is then placed on a cake covered in fondant or buttercream and accented with personalized edible cake images.

3D Yoda Cake

Sandra (socakes) provides a complete photo tutorial on how to create a 3D Yoda birthday cake. Start with a 6" round cake pan and a bowl shaped tin. Once cooled, stack the cakes and cover in buttercream. The body is then covered in green and brown fondant. Yoda's head is created out of chocolate crackle (like rice crispy treats) and inserted using a bamboo skewer into the body. For full cake instructions including photos visit Sandra's blog.

Death Star Cake Photos

Death Star Cake

A Star Wars Death Star cake can be created by baking a cake in a Wilton Ball Cake Pan. Once the cake is cooled and the ball shape is formed, cover the entire cake in buttercream.

Then, you can do one of two things.

  1. Cut out pieces of fondant and attach them randomly around the ball as you see in Photo #1.
  2. Cover the entire cake ball in fondant and using a sharp edge/knife make indents in the cake to form the squares as you see in Photo #2.

Both cakes would be great for your birthday party!

Lego Star Wars Cakes

Lego Star Wars Cake

To create a Lego Star Wars cake, you can bake a sheet cake and then top it with mini Lego Star Wars figures. Or, you could bake Lego shaped cakes and add the figures to that instead. Another idea would be to add a Lego Star Wars edible cake image to your home baked cake.

I enjoy making my son's birthday cakes. Although he's 12 now, he keeps coming up with more elaborate ideas. He'll love to see these! I love the lightsaber cake, especially the idea of lighting it up with a glow stick.

Oh I adore the Yoda one especially. If I was an android I would easily marry him, I have always thought how cute he is ROFL. Omg this really shows how creative people can be to come up with these brilliant designs. This one now brings back memories of the Super Mario one, that was awesome too. I love fun creative hubs like these. You have excelled yourself again, may the force be with you. (VAROOM) ....the engine noise of a Jedi fighter plane haha. :)

I love the creativity of these cake designs as well. I wish I was half as talented as these decorators. I have been so inspired that I am considering taking some Wilton cake decorating courses at my local craft store.

It's amazing how Star Wars continues to be such a favorite. I make Star Wars costumes, and birthday presents represent a big part of my buyers. Not just for kids either. Very nice designs. My sons, age 21 and 25 would love one of these Star Wars cakes!

LOL! Great hub! The Darth Vader and Yoda cakes had me rolling! It prompted me to do a google search on Star Wars birthday cakes and there are some REALLY bad ones out there, though I'm sure they're fun for the kids. The scary part was, most of 'em say "Happy 40th" on the top. :-O Thanks for the laugh! ROFL!

I love the 3D Yoda. I'll never have the time or talent to make something so wonderful, but I love looking at other people's creations.

I am only 13 years old and i want to know how to decorate an easy cake, (starwars)for my 16 yr old brother. i cant do any of that fancy-shmacy stuff. i can decorate very well, but i have trouble coming up with ideas!! any suggestions?

Janet21 profile image

Janet21 Hub Author 2 years ago

@13yrs: In my opinion, the easiest Star Wars cake to make would be to use an edible cake image. Maybe you can have someone purchase one for you. Then, you can bake a basic cake at home and decorate with white icing. Once the icing is finished, you then place the cake image on top. These cake images are very cool and you can even personalize it with your brother's name. Good luck!

These are great! I don't have to wait to have kids to want to try one of these. Both my husband and I (and a lot of our friends) would be thrilled to have one of these awesome Star Wars cakes! Of course, he's the baker, so he'd probably be better at cake making than me!
