Construction Theme Party
My sons loves everything that has to do with construction, so when his birthday came around this past February it was very easy for him to decide on a birthday party theme.
He had a Construction Theme Party for his 5th birthday. Many of his friends from his preschool class attended and everyone had a great time.
This page will feature all of our birthday party details as well as many of our party photos. I will tell you all about our party favors, birthday cake, party games, decorations and more.
We decided on the Under Construction party supplies for my son's birthday. We loved the colors and my son really liked the look of the construction trucks.
The party supplies we ordered included the dinner plates, dessert plates, cups, napkins and thank you cards.
The decorations we used from this party pack included the Photo Prop, Vehicle Cut Outs, Construction Sign Cut Outs, Caution Party Tape, Dump Truck Latex Balloons and Mylar Balloons.
Party Decorations
Our Construction Birthday Decorations
- Construction Vehicle & Road Sign Cutouts: Cutouts are my new favorite party decoration. For my son's party, we hung the vehicles on the light over the party table and the signs around the room.
- Caution Sign Tape: We ran the Caution Tape all around the party table.
- Under Construction Mylar Balloons and Dump Truck Latex Balloons: I really like the imprinted latex balloons and love when they are included with a partyware design. We also had a 30" dump truck balloon and other construction Mylar ballooons.
- Construction Theme Birthday Banner: I hung a personalized birthday banner up in the party room. The banner was not a heavy vinyl, but it did the job and my son loved to see his name in print!
- Construction Trucks and Construction Books: My son has a ton of construction vehicles and books. We placed these items all around the party room and on the party table.

Personalized Birthday Party Invitations
I have had many parties over the years for my kids and I always put a lot of thought into the invitation. I feel that the invitation sets the stage for the party and a cool invite very often means a very cool party! Having said that, the party invitationI purchased from Bella's Personalized Invitations I have listed here completely blew me away. Since I plan parties for a living, it takes a lot to impress me, but these invitations sure did.
I chose this particular invitation design because it matched the party supplies we were using for our party. I like to coordinate the invitation and partyware whenever possible. When I received the invitation, I could not believe how large it was. I realize the dimensions were listed in the auction, but I guess I didn't take note. These birthday invitations measured 8.5" x 3.5" which is very big for a ticket style invitation. My son loved them! He still has the invitation hanging in his room.

Dump Truck Cake
Dump Truck Birthday Cake
I got the idea for my son's dump truck birthday cake from Family Fun. The recipe called for chocolate cake, chocolate pudding and chocolate cookie crumbs. I wanted to leave the cake out during the party, so I decided against mixing in the pudding. It is made with milk, so I just wanted to be safe.
Here are the Dump Truck birthday cake instructions:
I baked four 9" round cakes using two boxes of Devil's Food cake. After the cakes cooled, I sliced them into pieces. I placed waxed paper in the back of the dump truck and then piled the cake pieces into the truck. This is a very large dump truck, so it took a lot of cake to fill! Meanwhile, I took chocolate Teddy Grahams and crushed them in a zip lock bag. I sprinkled the crushed cookies (dirt) over the cake pieces. When it was time to serve the birthday cake, I placed construction cone candles in the cake.
Previously, I had prepared a few boxes of chocolate pudding and put it in the refrigerator. I placed a small piece of cake, a spoonful of pudding, a Dixie ice-cream cup and cookie crumbs in each of the kids plates. I then went around to each of the kids and added whipped cream if they wanted it. The dessert was heavenly and enjoyed by everyone! Plus, it looked really cool in the dump truck.

Our Party Favors
Party Favors
For the party favors, I filled the boxes with lots of goodies. I find that little kids love favor boxes with an assortment of treats. As kids get older, you can purchase a few higher quality favors or even a standalone favor. However, for younger kids, I would recommend filling your favor boxes with lots of smaller items. Here is what we included in our party favor boxes
- Construction Favor Boxes (the Under Construction party supplies came with loot bags. I am not a big fan of those plastic loot bags, so I went with these boxes instead.)
- Hershey Kisses with personalized construction theme labels
- Truck Tattoos
- Truck Stickers
- Make Your Own Construction Worker Stickers
- Mini Pull Back Vehicles
- Mini Bubbles with Custom Label
- Tool Gummy Candies
- Dum-Dum Lollipops & Fruit Chews
- Small Notebook and a box of crayons
Construction Party Games & Activties
- Pin The Stop Sign on the Construction Site Game:
I found this game that matched the partyware. - Party Pinata:
There are quite a few Construction theme party pinatas on the market and I chose this cute Lego Ville pinata. I really wanted a pull-string pinata for the kids and I liked that the pull-strings were already attached. It just makes things easier. - Dump Truck Bean Bag Toss:
I purchased a custom made personalized Dump Truck Bean Bag toss from seller Mt. Laurel Party Games. The kids had a blast with this game. The game is now in my son's room and he still plays with it. - Design Your Own Construction Site:
This sticker activity was lots of fun. The sticker sheets were huge with lots to do. - Take-A-Pic:
I purchased a photo prop and the kids took turns taking their picture in it.
Personalized Construction Party Hats
Party Hats
I purchased plastic construction hats for all of the birthday party guests. These hats were a thin plastic, not very heavy duty, but they worked perfectly for the party.
I printed out each of the children's names on clear labels and attached them to the hats. The kids loved finding their name on their hat! This also helped each child find their hat during the party.
Party Thank Yous
Thank You Cards
I always like to get a group photo sometime during the party. It wasn't easy getting 12 three and four year old boys all together with their construction hats on, but we did it.
The photo came out great and I included it in the thank you cards. One of the mom's told me that her son loved the photo so much that she went out and got a frame for it.
